21 Key Activities to Get Ready for Business Acceleration Beyond 2021

The sanitary crisis has hit hard many businesses. Getting back to normal or building growth consistently in today’s times takes the fine orchestration of complex efforts in a broad scope of domains. This article is a tentative in articulating holistic views into details, with a focus on marketing/sales, digital strategies, and business growth tactics. Based on own experience across a diversity of industries, with small to large organisations of different digital maturities, I’ve come up with that list of 20+1 generic activities, or call them projects, split in five domains. A non academic, non exhaustive, and own approach as business consultant and manager, rooted in twenty-five years of business experience, refreshed with newest practices in digital business and marketing areas. Collaborative Realtime Business Drive

Agile Growth Programme

    A good start for business recovery or growth is surely with a solid plan. But “plan” actually sounds too simplistic and rigid for today’s times of complexity and constant change.

    The point today is more : have an all-round programme that is at the same time robust, holistic, well articulated, but nevertheless flexible, and it can be constantly revised on a fast iterative basis, or call it agile.

    Further, such a programme should be shared and owned by all relevant stakeholders and employees.

    Other critical characteristics include : 1. it should have an ambitious direction (“shoot for the moon”) 2. it should be solidly integrated (think of nesting dolls) 3. it should be articulated around goals, measurable tactics, with relevant metrics, and well defined responsibilities with clear timing.

    I like to add a fourth key dimension for such a programme: it should have an emotional side, with a compelling branding and a dedicated marcom plan for all stakeholders and employees to live it, not leave it.

    A good example for such a programme I can think of is the one we built at Samsung Germany to win big during the world soccer championship. I’ve built a case here.

    Another case revolves around the scaling of a corporate venture in the digital mobility arena; we built it on fast agile lean bases, with a solid agile programme and governance.

Team Alignment with OGSM-T

    Better than simplistic OKR (Objectives Key Results), OGSM is a great framework (when used properly) which helps teams align around business Objectives (in words), into Goals (in figures) into Strategies (in words), with relevant Metrics. Add T for Tactical and give a sense of ownership and deadlines.

    We used it daily with my team at Samsung Germany to accelerate the TV business like never before (business case). You might think it’s appropriate for largest companies only ?

    Very relevant for the smallest to the largest businesses actually, for any organisation. I’ve practiced it a lot with startups and SMEs too, it proved to be very effective.

    Business is about getting people in the same direction, with a collective passionate effort, ultimately measured by nice figures, isn’t it ? Add some emotional dimension to it, and you’ll do magic, OGSM-T is surely a good way to go.

    The right choice of tools is especially critical in marketing-sales areas : here not only they help operate better, faster together, they are vital to make a difference in the market.

    Without appropriate tools it becomes extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get attention and impact in the market, as digital channels, connected people and communities become THE market.

    Before talking about artificial intelligence, connecting, structuring, and visualising all business data at hand is surely a good start.

    Most managers think they don’t have enough data for running their business. In fact, most companies, whatever their size, have huge data at hand. But often they’re not actionable as they are scattered in a diversity of siloed systems e.g. Excel sheets, CRM, SAP and likes, databases, in-house legacy systems.

    How could all those data be leveraged to make better decisions ? There is a clear way to go : visual dashboarding is the answer. Advanced platforms like Tableau, or specific ones for digital marketing-sales, help efficiently in connecting and displaying huge complex scattered sets of data into comestible visualisations for business managers.

    I have a retailer case here (“datasets into business assets”) articulating how Tableau can be used to help marketing, sales, supply chain and buyers make better and faster decisions, by using sophisticated realtime interactive dashboards.

    In that example, big data from a diversity of silos (SAP, Excel, Oracle etc) are instantly captured and displayed live in a diversity of nice visualisations, with filters and drill-down functions.

    Thereby, managers across the company have a common base to make better decisions, or elaborate experimentations for improving their business.
